[Emily wasn't even planning on attending, given how direly she hated politics of any kind including office politics, but then Hotch had so very politely reminded them all that the invitation wasn't entirely optional. And so, as she looked around the room for familiar faces as she headed to get herself a drink.]

We couldn't get so lucky.

[Now El is embarrassed. So she downs some of the punch to try to not look like a total loser and get her bearings. Then she smiles.]

I guess my head just isn't in the rubbing elbows thing tonight. I'm Elizabeth Burke.

[The last thing that admission makes El, in Em's mind, is a loser. It might well have made them instant friends. Clearly Elizabeth was not an agent, so Emily took a quick look around to see if she could pick out the husband. No luck, but she would look again soon.] Emily Prentiss. And I'm never into rubbing elbows. I've had my fill.

[She'd had her fill by about age fifteen.]

[That makes El smile. At least it's someone who understands.] I haven't noticed you at one of these parties before. Do you work out of New York?

Quantico. I'm with the BAU. [They were in the New York Metro area consulting on a handful of cases that required some on the ground work. They team had spread out for a few days and now they were hitting the party circuit before heading back.] Sometimes they actually let us out with the public.

Well, I hope you had sometime to look around. New York is really nice this time of year. [She nods her chin towards Peter, who is being social and his usual self.] That's my husband, Peter. He works in the White Collar division here.

Honestly, I just want to get home. New York makes me tense. [Too many bad memories, really. Her own ears almost ring in sympathy with Hotch's old injury. Then there was the fact that her mother could be in town.] Crazy, right?

[She looks over at Peter, taking in his relaxed air and easy confidence. He looked a little sharper than she expected for someone in White Collar.] Okay, maybe there are a few good things about the city...

You just need to find the right places here to relax. [She sees Emily checking out her husband, and it just makes her smile kind of smugly.] I guess I haven't done too badly for myself. He does clean up nicely. [Too bad Neal isn't here. He'd certainly give Emily something to be impressed by.]

At this point what I need to relax is a quiet room and a big book. [There is something so sweet about Elizabeth's expression, smugness and all. Of course, just about then Derek Morgan walks by, flashing Emily a smile. She clears her throat.] Yeah, not sure when the men of the Bureau got so tasty.

He's my partner.

[Elizabeth might be a married woman, but that doesn't mean she's blind. So she checks the guy out and nods in approval. Then she gives Emily a playful look.]

I have the say, the FBI certainly keeps it's standards high on most counts.

We really do. Long days when all I see is them and pictures of death and destruction? It helps.

I guess you gotta cling to whatever good things you can find about the job sometimes. [El is just glad that Peter doesn't deal a whole lot with murders. Kate dying and Neal going through that was bad enough on all of them.] To bad Neal isn't here... He's a consultant that works with my husband. He's not too bad to look at, either.

[That triggers a memory in Emily and she frowns for a moment while she tries to figure it out.] The con man, right? Art expert. [The FBI was a pretty small world, really.]

[El laughs at that because, wow, very small world.] That's the one. He really is a good guy, though.

I'm trying to picture my Unit Chief putting up with something like that... [Given how rocky her unannounced start with the BAU had been, it's not a pretty picture.] He's not big on uncertainty.

[El shrugs.] The Bureau took a chance on Neal. But I think it's panned out, he's helped solve a lot of cases. It's helped him a lot more than being in jail, that's for sure.

Seems to work a lot better than when we interview our targets. I mean, we get good information, but I think I'd rather talk to your guy... [Talking to convicted serial killers in order to build better profiles was a huge part of their job, but it wasn't exactly fun.]

[Again, El's just glad Peter's in White Collar and doesn't really have to deal with that whole lot. Not to say since Neal came along things hadn't gotten just a little more dramatic.]

If Neal knows how to do anything, it's talk. My husband wouldn't always agree, at least not in public, but Neal is probably a huge improvement over a lot of the people you guys have to deal with.

Maybe he'll agree to a trade, just for a week?

He complains about Neal but honestly I think he's gotten a little attached. But he might trade for Yankees tickets.

[Emily cracks up. What is it with buying fellow LEOs ball game tickets. But the last guy was a Mets fan.] I'm sure something could be worked out.

[El would say it's something about men and their balls.] How much longer are you in town for?

[We all know how they love to play with them.] One more day, mostly because two of our team are giving some talk about what we do.

Can I get the Cliff's Notes? I mean, I know a lot about what Peter does, but other sections are really my forte.
