Subtle is good. The traditional opener is 'what are you wearing?' but being direct may not be the way to go, especially the first few times.

Start by making sure you both have time and privacy. You can emphasize it. Talk about feelings.

How he makes you feel that kind of thing. Establish emotional intimacy and if you're on the same wavelength, try fanaticism out-loud. Should be some give and take here.

I imagine it sounds far more complicated than it is. I'm not sure subtlety is the way to go with Steve, but it is worth a try. I can't even imagine how he would react to 'what are you wearing' aside from telling me precisely everything he has on.
